The Perrysburg Area Arts Council is pleased to present an entire weekend filled with fiber art workshops! To register, please print out the registration form (link below) and return to the PAAC office. Please contact us if you have any questions.

All the following classes will be held on June 26th-27th at The 577 Foundation in Perrysburg. Seats are limited to 10 students per class so register early to reserve your spot! Class attendees are invited to a complimentary lunch on the grounds of The 577 Foundation.

Screen-Printing Techniques on Fabric (FULL)

The Perrysburg Area Arts Council reserves the right to cancel a class due to low registration (100% of the class fee will be refunded). Please note: refunds will not be issued to registered students who cancel after June 8th.

NUNO FELTING (2-day workshop)

Instructor: Annie Lawrence

Date/Time: June 26th, 9am-5pm & June 27th, 9am-4pm.

Cost: $115 (includes lunch both days)

Learn the ancient form of traditional wet felting with a modern twist. You will make a one of a kind scarf using merino wool and lightweight silk fabric. Every student should go home with a finished project.

Materials list will be supplied upon registration. Fee includes enough silk fabric and wool for one scarf, bubble-wrap and handouts.

About the Instructor:

Annie Lawrence has been working in areas of fiber since her childhood. She started out learning to sew from her mom and has never stopped looking for ways to use fiber creatively. She has traveled throughout the United States and New Zealand to expand her knowledge and skills of all things fiber and beads. Her garments, felt, and beadwork have been exhibited in Pittsburgh, PA, Greenwich, CT, Morgantown, WV, and Sydney and Brisbane, Austrailia. Annie has served as Vice President of the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh and has been involved with Fiberarts International. She teaches at Touchstone Center for Craft and the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh.

Coiled Fiber Jewelry

Instructor: Sharon Hammer Baker

Dates: June 26th, 9am-4pm.

Cost: $60 (includes lunch)

Learn to create unique and beautiful jewelry with the ancient technique of coiling. Coiling is a weaving process which involves covering a flexible core with fibers and building a form row upon row. When the basic form is complete, embellishments may be added, such as beads, charms, feathers or shells.

During this one day workshop, students will learn the history of coiling, appropriate materials to select for jewelry making, and techniques for designing, creating and finishing a piece. A brooch will be completed during the class, with time to begin a second piece.

Instructor provides core materials, yarns, pin backs, beads, beading and weaving needles, sewing and beading threads.

Bring: Scissors, sewing needles, thimble, paper and pencil for notes & designing.

About the Instructor:

Sharon Hammer Baker has been weaving for over 25 years, and holds a bachelors and masters degrees in Art and Education. She has taught art in elementary grades and at the college level, as well as privately in her studio in Finday, Ohio. Her personal work includes both 2 and 3 dimensional fiber work in tapestry and mixed fibers. She most recently taught coiled weaving for the Findlay Art League, Findlay, OH and at Edison State College, Piqua, OH. She has also given lectures on the history of weaving for Hancock Historical Museum and the University of Findlay.

Card Weaving

Instructor: Susan Cayton of Five Point Studio

Dates: June 27th, 1pm-4pm.

Cost: $35 (includes lunch)

Try your hand at an ancient form of weaving on portable cards with four holes using cotton or wool. Weave a warp-faced narrow band like the early Egyptians or Scandanavians. Watch a demo, study photos, books and view ideas to make accessories for wallhangings or clothing.

Bring: Scissors, pencil and sturdy leather belt. Receive a handout, cards, yarn and instructions.

About the Instructor:

Susan received a bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s degree in art from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Over the years, she has taught in various art education settings for children, youth and adults. Her work has been on exhibit in shows in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. A full-time studio artist, Susan creates a wide variety of work as a spinner, weaver, dyer and teacher. A co-owner of Five Point Studio for 40 years, Susan is also a frequent re-enactor at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg.

Screen-Printing Techniques on Fabric

Instructor: Jennifer Solon

Dates: June 26th, 10am-4pm.

Cost: $75 (includes lunch)

Class is FULL, Waiting List ONLY!

Learn a variety of surface design techniques involving non-traditional ways to “screen” images onto fabric. This class will cover deconstructed screen-printing (using screens textured with thickened dyes) as well as other methods of creating screens: from digital images, fabric interfacing, scratch art screens and more. Come prepared to get messy and play!

Instructor will provide screens, paints, dyes and other supplies for use during the class. Each student will receive 2 scratch art screens and 1 photo-ez screen to take home (along with all their fabric creations!).

Bring: Base cotton fabric to decorate (approximately 5 yds total - any size pieces, light colors/patterns), apron, sponge brushes, paper towels, large old towel, pen/paper for notes, plastic/vinyl tablecloth, black garbage bag.

About the Instructor:

Jennifer is a fiber artist who creates abstract textile collages. Using dyes and paints along with a variety of surface design techniques, Jennifer transforms plain white cloth into multi-layered fabric constructions. Her work has been featured in several local exhibits, including the 91st Annual Toledo Area Artists Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art.
